Commissioner Hugo Cabrera
Parks and Public Property Commissioner HUGO CABRERA was elected in 1999, after serving as chairman of the Municipal Utilities Authority. His department manages North Bergen's fields, grounds and buildings, as well as the township’s flourishing recreation program.
Commissioner Cabrera and his staff schedule games and practices, and manage North Bergen’s recreation spaces, with thousands of children taking part in many different sports. A lifelong North Bergen resident, Hugo played recreation sports growing up and has coached his children and many others in several sports.
He has advocated for more recreation fields for our children and more open park space for the community. Commissioner Cabrera oversaw the new downtown park built on Paterson Plank Road and the renovation of numerous other parks and fields, as well as the ongoing construction of the new North Bergen Community Center and Library.
He currently serves as the secretary for the North Bergen Board of Education, responsible for all official record keeping, correspondence and employment compliance. Under his leadership along with Superintendent Dr. George Solter and the rest of the administrative team, North Bergen is undergoing a school realignment plan that will lower class sizes and bring a new school as well as many much-needed updates to the community.
