Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) – General Information
 
The Township of North Bergen is proud to participate in New Jersey’s Urban Enterprise Zone (UEZ) Program, administered by the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs (DCA) through the Urban Enterprise Zone Authority (UEZA).
 
The UEZ Program was created to revitalize designated communities by stimulating economic development and job creation through public and private investment.
Participating businesses may receive tax and financial incentives that encourage growth and strengthen local economies.
 
Program Overview
Established in 1997, North Bergen’s UEZ designation allows qualifying businesses within the zone to charge customers half the standard New Jersey sales tax rate (currently 3.3125%) and enjoy other state-authorized benefits.
Funds collected through UEZ activity are reinvested locally in infrastructure, beautification, and business-support projects such as:
 
  • West Side Avenue Sewer Improvements
  • Bergenline Avenue/Broadway Streetscape Enhancements
  • Tonnelle Avenue Redevelopment Zone
  • 83rd Street Flood-Control Improvements
These investments strengthen the township’s commercial corridors while improving quality of life for residents and visitors.
 
Program Administration
The UEZ Program is administered statewide by the NJ Department of Community Affairs (DCA) through the Urban Enterprise Zone Authority (UEZA). The Township of North Bergen oversees local UEZ projects and maintains program compliance in coordination with the state.
