Last year, thanks to the efforts of the North Bergen Police Department and the community they serve, the Township of North Bergen experienced an 8.9% decrease in crime from the year before.

The NBPD recently published a detailed annual report for 2019 listing comparative crime statistics for the past few years, along with information on notable cases, officers of the month, and much more.

Some highlights of the report include the following:

• Last year the NBPD received 149,402 total calls for service (17 calls per hour)
• A total of 1,158 arrests were made in 2019
• There were 2,060 overall offenses, down from 2,262 the prior year
• This represents a five-year decrease of 21.2% since 2014 and a 20-year decrease of 51.6% since 1999

“Our North Bergen Police Department has been recognized numerous times as one of the finest law enforcement institutions not only in the State of New Jersey, but the entire country,” said Mayor Nicholas Sacco. “This year we were able to reassert this by becoming a re-accredited police department. The NBPD is a model for diversity and efficiency as evidenced in the promotion of the first Latina Captain in the history of Hudson County and the first Latino Captain in township history. Thanks to the NBPD’s relentless work and community policing tactics, the Township of North Bergen has achieved historic lows in its crime rate.”

The 32-page annual report includes detailed charts reflecting the continual decrease in crime in the municipality since 1985. Also included is information on notable cases, community programs and outreach, department initiatives, goals, photos, org charts, demographics, and much more.
