North Bergen Hosts Second Annual Community Garden Outreach Event
May 29, 2026Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Commissioner Hugo Cabrera welcomed residents to the second annual North Bergen Community Garden outreach event at the North Bergen Recreation Center & Library, continuing the Township’s efforts to promote sustainability, education, and community engagement.
The annual community garden initiative allows residents to visit, care for, and personalize their own plants while learning about gardening and environmental stewardship. The program brings together the Township, local schools, businesses, and community organizations in support of hands-on learning opportunities.
Members of the North Bergen High School Environmental Club attended the event alongside co-moderators Dana Hojnowski and Jennifer Checchio. The co-moderators spoke about the importance of providing hands-on gardening experiences for students, especially in urban communities where many young people may not otherwise have opportunities to learn about growing plants, vegetables, and herbs firsthand.
Cindy DePice and the Green Advisory Board also helped strengthen partnerships with businesses including Home Depot and Lowe’s, while the North Bergen Recreation Department assisted in supplying materials and nursery support. Contributions also supported the North Bergen High School greenhouse program.
Commissioner Hugo Cabrera and County Commissioner Robert Baselice also participated in planting activities alongside residents and students while discussing future sustainability efforts, including plans for a composting initiative coming soon to the community garden.
Residents are encouraged to continue visiting and participating in the community garden throughout the season.
