Happy 183rd Birthday, North Bergen!
April 10, 2026On Apr. 10, 1843, North Bergen was officially incorporated as a township by an act of the New Jersey Legislature.
North Bergen was first established on Feb. 10, 1843, when it separated from the northern portion of Bergen Township, a municipality created in 1661 by early Dutch settlers that once encompassed all of present-day Hudson and Bergen counties. It was formally incorporated later that same year.
At the time of its founding, North Bergen was significantly larger than it is today, with its southern border extending near what is now Journal Square. Over time, sections of the township separated to form neighboring municipalities, shaping the boundaries that exist today.
