Mayor & Commissioners Host First-Ever Ramadan Ceremony at Town Hall
February 13, 2026The Township of North Bergen made history on Thursday, Feb. 12 with the first-ever Ramadan ceremony at Town Hall, a beautiful celebration of faith, reflection, and community unity.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco introduced the ceremony, joined by Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Allen Pascual, and Claudia Rodriguez, County Commissioner Robert Baselice, and Housing Authority Executive Director Julio Marenco, all recognizing and celebrating the diversity that is the strength of our community.
The program began with a moving recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Mohammed Abdulla of NHIEC, setting a meaningful tone for the afternoon. Sheikh Mohammed Moussa, Sayel Kayed of AMP, Principal Hamza Abdelhadi of Franklin Elementary School, Shanaz from the Eid Committee of NJ, Bader Risheg, and Principal Sister Hala all spoke during the ceremony.
Students from the North Bergen High School Middle Eastern Club, under the guidance of moderator Nesrin Abulaban, shared powerful reflections on the meaning of Ramadan and presented a heartfelt poetry reading. In addition, a student of Rising Star Academy spoke beautifully about the importance of faith, compassion, and self-reflection during this holy month.
Also in attendance to show their support were Town Administrator Janet Castro, Police Chief Robert Farley, and many police officers and township employees, along with a large community turnout.
