Renovations Start with a Bang at Main Library Building

September 05, 2025

The launch of renovations in the North Bergen Free Public Library on Thursday, Sep. 4 was a smashing success. Mayor Nicholas Sacco was joined by the Township Commissioners, Township Administrator Janet Castro, Assemblyman Julio Marenco, County Commissioner Robert Baselice, and Library Executive Director Sai Rao, all of them wielding hammers or other destructive tools, as they began demolishing the sheetrock to begin the renovations.

Numerous loyal patrons participated in the event to share in the momentous beginning of the library’s next phase, and to enjoy a meal of pizza, cookies, and snacks. The facility had previously been emptied and prepped for reconstruction; now the work begins on overhauling and enhancing the building on both floors, including constructing new study rooms and conference rooms, upgrading the downstairs multipurpose room, enlarging the teen room, and expanding into the former theater space next door.

The work is being paid for by a $3 million from the NJ State Library, secured in partnership with the North Bergen Health Department.

While the construction is taking place, residents are invited to use the library’s pop-up location uptown at 510 81st Street.
