Officials Cut the Ribbon on New Junior High School Named in Honor of Mayor Nicholas J. Sacco
September 05, 2025Township officials, educators, and community members gathered on Tuesday, Sep. 2 to cut the ribbon on North Bergen’s long-anticipated new junior high school. In a surprise announcement that drew cheers from the crowd, it was revealed that by official Board of Education resolution the school will carry a new name: Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School, honoring the mayor’s 30 years of service to the township.
The state-of-the-art facility will welcome seventh and eighth grade students this Thursday, Sep. 4, providing modern classrooms, advanced technology, and expanded spaces for the arts and sciences.
“The opening of this new junior high school represents years of planning, hard work, and commitment to our students’ future,” said Superintendent of North Bergen Schools Dr. George Solter. “It provides the technology and resources our young people deserve as they prepare for the next stages of their education. Renaming the school in honor of Mayor Sacco is especially meaningful, as his leadership and dedication to education have been instrumental in making this day possible. This building is not only a school, it is a symbol of the bright future of North Bergen.”
The renaming honors Mayor Sacco’s lifelong dedication to education and his role in strengthening North Bergen’s public school system. In addition to serving as mayor, Sacco’s long career as an educator and administrator has left an enduring mark on generations of students.
“Today we are not just opening a school, we are honoring a man whose life has been defined by his commitment to education and to North Bergen,” said Public Safety Commissioner and Director of Special Projects Allen Pascual. “It is only fitting that this beautiful new building bears the name Nicholas J. Sacco.”
Frank Gargiulo, former commissioner and longtime superintendent of Hudson County Schools of Technology – which included High Tech High School, the school once located on the new school’s property – was among those present at the event. The North Bergen High School band played the national anthem and provided music for the ceremony. With Nicholas J. Sacco Junior High School officially open, administrators look forward to welcoming students into an environment designed to inspire learning, innovation, and community pride.
