Controlled Blasting to Begin for Hudson Tunnel Project

August 15, 2025
As part of the Gateway Development Commission’s Hudson Tunnel Project, controlled blasting will begin soon at the construction site located at 1801 Tonnelle Avenue.

The contractor will conduct a safety drill on Tuesday, Aug. 12. Residents in proximity to the site may hear air horn signals around 8:55 a.m. Tuesday as part of the drill.

Controlled blasting will begin on Tuesday, Aug. 19 and continue Monday through Friday between the hours of 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. throughout the remainder of the year. Each blast will be brief, lasting less than one second, with up to four blasts anticipated per day. During this window, brief traffic stoppages lasting no more than five minutes will occur on Tonnelle Avenue and Paterson Plank Road to ensure public safety. Police officers and flaggers will be on site to assist with traffic and pedestrian management.
