Township Honors Veterans at Annual Ceremony in Rec Center
November 15, 2024The Township of North Bergen once again held its annual Veterans Day ceremony at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, 2024 in the Recreation Center.
Many local veterans and residents attended the annual event to honor those who served our country. Assemblyman and Navy veteran Julio Marenco served as emcee for the ceremony, accompanied by Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Allen Pascual, Claudia Rodriguez, and Anthony Vainieri, along with County Commissioner Robert Baselice, Fire Director Michael DeOrio, and Deputy Director John Belluardo.
U.S. Army veteran Michael Matera, the oldest veteran in attendance at age 95, led the Pledge of Allegiance. Robert Thomas Ramirez was presented with a plaque naming him North Bergen’s Veteran of the Year for 2024.
North Bergen High School student Nicholas Gamboa sang the National Anthem and NBHS High School Band members Brianna Monzone and Kevin Sarmiento played “Taps” to conclude the ceremony. Pastor Gregory Dunlap offered the invocation and Father Yuvan Alvarez provided the benediction.
Nov. 11, 2024 marks the 106th anniversary of the end of fighting between the allied forces and Germany in World War I. The date was initially celebrated as Armistice Day or Remembrance Day before becoming known as Veterans Day.
