MUA Breaks Ground on Largest Stormwater Overflow Tank in New Jersey
October 25, 2024The North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority held a press conference on Friday, Oct. 18 to announce the groundbreaking of a new five-million-gallon stormwater overflow tank, the largest of its kind in the state of New Jersey. This state-of-the-art facility is designed to significantly reduce the frequency and volume of overflows into local waterways, improving water quality and protecting the environment.
The new CSO tank will address these issues by capturing and storing excess water during heavy rainfall events. This will allow for a more controlled and environmentally responsible release, preventing pollution and protecting the health of local waterways.
Located near 85th Street and Tonnelle Avenue, the tank is designed to capture up to five million gallons during every wet weather event. Instead of overflowing into local creeks, the water will be stored until the rain event ends and then gradually discharged back into the sewer system for proper treatment before being released into the waterways.
The press conference was well-attended by North Bergen Mayor Nicholas Sacco, MUA Executive Director Frank Pestana, Township Commissioners Allen Pascual, Hugo Cabrera and Claudia Rodriguez, Township Administrator Janet Castro, County Commissioner Robert Baselice, Assemblyman Julio Marenco, and other officials.
