Sgt. Roberto Maldonado Honored with Retirement Walkout Ceremony
July 31, 2024The North Bergen Police Department and North Bergen Township employees gathered on Wednesday, Jul. 31 for a walkout ceremony to honor and celebrate the distinguished career of Sergeant Roberto Maldonado, who is retiring after 28 years of dedicated service.
Sgt. Maldonado's career began on Jan. 12, 1996, when he was sworn in as a police officer. After completing his training at the Bergen County Police Academy in Mahwah, New Jersey, he was initially assigned to the HUD Community Policing Unit, where he served from 1996 to 2000.
From 2000 to 2010, Sgt. Maldonado worked as an investigator in the Auto Theft and Street Crimes Unit. He then transitioned to the Patrol Division’s Squad Four in 2010.
His career continued to evolve as he joined the Detective Bureau, working in the Burglary Unit and later the Juvenile Division at the high school. In 2019, his dedication and leadership were recognized with a promotion to Sergeant. He was reassigned to the Detective Bureau as the daytime supervisor, a role he has excelled in until his retirement.
Throughout his career, Sgt. Maldonado has received numerous commendations and awards for his exceptional performance, including six Class B Awards, 13 Class C Awards, nine Class D Awards, and two unit citations.
He was named Officer of the Month ten times, reflecting his consistent dedication. In 2014, he was honored as Officer of the Year. Additionally, in 2009, Sgt. Maldonado received two Outstanding Police Officer Awards from the VFW District 3 & Ladies Auxiliary, and the Edward McDowell VFW Post 2648 & Ladies Auxiliary.
