The Third Annual Classic Car & Bike Show took over Bergenline Avenue from 79th to 85th Streets on Sunday, June 10, 2018 bringing nearly a century’s worth of antiques, hot rods, muscle cars, luxury rides, military vehicles, and much more to the streets of North Bergen. Adding to the retro fun, legendary oldies group The Demensions performed several sets live onstage.
Occasional light rain kept some cars and pedestrians home, but that didn’t dampen the spirits of the attendees, who enjoyed checking out more than 100 classic and souped-up vehicles. Among the rarest offerings this year were a 1986 M998 HumVee original military vehicle, a 1977 Sebring Vanguard (one of the first electric vehicles), a 1971 Rolls Royce, a 1950 Studebaker, a 1966 Auburn Speedster, and a 1929 Ford Model A.
The event was sponsored by Hudson County Freeholder Anthony Vainieri and organized by the North Bergen Police Department and Latino Automotive Business Services (LABS619) as a fundraiser for the New Jersey Special Olympics. With the continued support of Mayor Nicholas Sacco, Police Chief Robert Dowd, Hudson County Parks, and all the North Bergen departments that help make the event a success, more than $4,000 was raised for the charity. Generous donations were contributed by Anthony Vainieri, The North American Islamic Center, Rose’s Italian Deli, and Doctor D. Rotoli.
Trophies were awarded to the top vehicles in numerous categories. Among the major honorees were the following:
- Best in Show: David Emmel, 1957 Chevy Bel Air
- Best Paint (1st Place): Wayne Boyd, 1958 Chevy Impala
- Best Paint (2nd Place): Douglas Hakes, 1969 Ford Mustang
- Mayor’s Choice: John LiButti, 1970 Lincoln Continental
Commissioners Hugo Cabrera, Julio Marenco, and Allen Pascual all visited the show, along with many other township officials, administrators, and employees. Even Senator Robert Menendez dropped in for a quick afternoon visit.
LABS619 is run by the husband-and-wife team of Felix Velez (CEO/founder) and Lana Velez (director of community relations), who coordinate car events throughout New Jersey for various municipalities and private organizations. In its third year the North Bergen show is already one of their most successful, and continues to grow and improve annually.
