Crackdown on Summer Speeding
In North Bergen
Law enforcement officers from the Township of North
Bergen will be cracking down on speeding motorist this summer, as part
of the “Obey the Signs or Pay the Fines” initiative. This program will
begin on July 1st, in advance of the July 4th holiday, and will run
until the end of the month in more than 180 northern New Jersey
municipalities.
Police agencies in Bergen, Essex, Hudson, Morris, Passaic, Sussex and
Warren Counties will participate in this anti-speeding program that
resulted in more than 10,800 speeding citations during the 2007
campaign.
“Excessive speed, particularly on local roads, is one of the leading
contributors to traffic crashes,” said Pam Fischer, Director of the New
Jersey Division of Highway Traffic Safety. “Last year, 22,839 crashes
were speed-related and 166 of those crashes resulted in fatalities.”
Speeding reduces a driver’s ability to steer safety around curves or
objects in the roadway. It also extends the distance necessary to stop a
vehicle, and it increases the distance a vehicle travels during the time
it takes for the driver to react to a dangerous situation.
“If you are speeding in New Jersey, you will be stopped and you will be
fined,” Fisher added. “Police will not give warnings. They will be
writing tickets.”
North Bergen Public Safety Commissioner Theresa Ferraro also expressed
her deepest support to this initiative, “We are working together in a
committed effort to make our roads safer”, said Ferraro. “I am very
proud of the excellent job North Bergen officers do every day, and I am
confident that they will excel in cracking down on speeders in our
town.”

North Bergen Police Officers
Ran for a Noble Cause
For 22 consecutive years the North Bergen Police
Department has joined the Police Benevolent Association in an effort to
raise money to help fund the New Jersey Special Olympics.
Once again this year, the NB Police Department rallied support for the
annual Torch Run that encourages police officers to carry the torch in
their respective municipalities from North Bergen through Guttenberg,
West New York and Union City, into Weehawken and Hoboken and from Jersey
City into Newark, with the Torch eventually arriving in Trenton.
More than 20 officers from North Bergen participated in this event that
kicked off at 9 a.m. today from North Hudson Braddock Park located at

enabled them to donate the collected funds to the Special Olympics of
New Jersey.
Captain Robert Dowd has been coordinating the event for numerous years
in North Bergen and was please to see one more time, how enthusiastic
and committed the officers were to this noble cause. “The Torch run is a

officers wanting to get involved and running to support this important
cause every year .”

OUTSTANDING CONTRIBUTION TO “NORTH HUDSON COATS FOR KIDS”

During a special ceremony celebrated on May 27th 2008 at Kennedy School,
Maria Malavasi-Quartello and Mark Quartello, main coordinators of the
“North Hudson Coats for Kids” program awarded both Kennedy School and
Lincoln Annex in North Bergen for their outstanding contributions to
this amazing community program.
“North Hudson Coats for Kids” is a charitable organization that provides
coats, hats and scarves to needy children and adults during the cold
winter months. Following a 13 year initiative created by her father
Mario Malavasi, today, Maria Malavasi-Quartello continues to be a
driving force behind this program that encourages kids to give back to
the community and fosters a sense of commitment to community service
among north Hudson schools.
North Bergen has an outstanding record of donations from both the
schools and the community. Indeed, as Maria Malavasi-Quartello states
“North Bergen is the most generous community to our program with the
highest number of donations every year.” This year, two North Bergen
schools even surpassed that impressive record by donating the highest
number of coats for any school since the creation of the program.
Kennedy School and Lincoln Annex Principals, Mr. Guestioni and Mr.
Tomasino respectively, received, on behalf of their schools, a plaque
honoring their students’ generosity and commitment to community service.
The District’s Superintendent, Bob Dandorph; Assistant Superintendent,
Nick Sacco, a group of Kennedy students and members of its personnel who
contributed to this great success were also present as the awards were
presented.
“These awards are testimony of our students’ commitment to give back to
their community,” said Bob Dandorph Superintendent of Schools. “It’s
impressive to see how much effort, work and generosity our students put
into this program. We are really proud of them as we expect to continue
to be able to help those in need when they need us the most,” affirmed
Nick Sacco, Assistant Superintendent.
Beatriz Abreu, Nikole Guevara and Laura Aguirre from Kennedy Schools who
were some of the students that worked very hard in helping this program,
expressed their pride and commitment to continue working to give a warm
gift to those in need
