The North Bergen High School Environmental Club conducted a cleanup on Tonnelle Avenue and 37th Street through the North Bergen Clean Communities Program on Saturday, Nov. 19.
Each of the 29 participants received a t-shirt and was given the tools to get the job done. All together they cleared more than 1,000 pounds of total waste, plus another 26 large trash bags filled with recyclables weighing 876 pounds.
Once the area was cleaned the club members were invited to a pizza lunch. The township will also donate a check for $500 to the Environmental Club, which will be used to build a garden in front of the high school in the spring. The club will be in charge of planting and maintaining this garden. The Hudson County Improvement Authority will also donate rain barrels to promote water conservation.
Clean Communities provides North Bergen with funds for anti-litter campaigns and cleanups throughout the township. This cleanup was conducted with the cooperation of the North Bergen DPW.
