Swarms of kids showed up in uniform at Bruin Stadium on Friday, June 29 to pick up their awards at the end of the North Bergen Recreation soccer season. Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Commissioners Hugo Cabrera and Julio Marenco were on hand to personally give out participation awards to about 800 kids, and take photos with the individual players and teams.
The event also included a tasty barbecue dinner, complete with thousands of free hamburgers and hot dogs, plus chicken fingers, fries, pizza, refreshments, and more. Kids and their parents lined up, some under umbrellas on the warm summer evening, to enjoy the festive meal.
Soccer has rapidly become one of the most popular sports in North Bergen, with about 1,100 kids participating in the home and traveling teams. Every one receives a participation award at the end of their respective season, with additional trophies going to the winners in different categories.
