If there was a theme to the surprise free concert by singer/rapper 070 Shake in Braddock Park’s Bruin Stadium on Tuesday, June 19, it was one of empowerment. Shake, a former student at North Bergen High School, has skyrocketed to prominence recently with guest appearances on albums by Kanye West, Pusha T, and Nas.
Giving back to the community that originally supported her by holding the one-off live appearance in her hometown, she attracted hundreds of enthusiastic fans despite the show being promoted solely through social media. Accompanied by a female DJ and several female vocalists, she repeatedly urged the audience to follow their dreams and to remain positive, using herself as an example.
Beginning the show on a stage erected at mid-field, Shake soon made her way into the stands, where her fans rapturously sang along and spontaneously broke into crowd-surfing and a mosh pit. Sporting an “070” tattoo near her temple (representing the North Jersey zip code) along with platform shoes, a chain around her torso, and a do-rag over her braids, the (barely) 21-year-old former NBHS basketball player worked the crowd like a pro, spreading an infectiously positive vibe.
Shake ended the show with hugs, autographs and selfies with fans, and even photos with babies, and thanked Mayor Sacco, the police, and the Parks Department, among others, for allowing her to put on the free show in the municipal stadium.
Proceeds from the sale of merchandise were donated to local schools.
