The bleachers at the North Bergen Recreation Center were filled with spectators waving American flags at the township’s annual Memorial Day services on Thursday night, May 24, 2018. Mayor Nicholas Sacco was among the officials who paid solemn tribute to the U.S. servicemen and servicewomen who died while serving our country.
Former Hudson County Surrogate Donald Dileo once again served as master of ceremonies, with Pastor Paul Haviland of the Hudson Vineyard Church offering the invocation and benediction. Dottie Duffet, past department president of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, offered a prayer for peace.
The North Bergen High School Band played the National Anthem and a medley of patriotic songs, and a bugler from the band played Taps. An honor squad from the Edward McDowell VFS Post #2648 and American Legion Post #44 presented a multiple-gun salute.
Also speaking at the event to offer heartfelt tributes to the fallen heroes of our military were Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, Commissioners Frank Gargiulo, Julio Marenco, and Allen Pascual, and Guttenberg Councilman Richie Delafuente.
