For the second year in a row, the North Bergen Police Department raised money for colon cancer research and awareness by holding a “No-Shave November,” during which officers put down their razors and opened their wallets to the tune of $50 each. This year there were 91 participants in the department, raising more than $5,000, including a $500 contribution from PBA Local 18.
The month culminated in a marathon shaving session on Thursday, Nov. 30 at Eye Contact Vision Center, 7733 Bergenline Ave., with the razors wielded by employees of Jagged Edge Spa and Salon. Public Safety Commissioner Allen Pascual was on hand to support the officers who sat down in for a long-overdue shave.
Eye Contact’s owner, Bob Ceragno, a colon cancer survivor and strong advocate of early testing and detection, is the driving force behind the annual fundraiser, noting that colon cancer is a treatable illness if diagnosed early. Police Chief Robert Dowd encouraged police officers to participate in the drive as part of his focus on health and well-being in the department.
