North Bergen was among the honorees awarded with a plaque at the annual Sustainable Jersey luncheon on Tuesday, Nov. 14, 2017 in Atlantic City. The Township was honored for once again attaining bronze certification, indicating that it has made a commitment to sustainability and succeeded in implementing significant steps toward the long-term goal of a sustainable New Jersey and world.
North Bergen is one of only five municipalities in Hudson County to be certified, along with Hoboken, Jersey City, Secaucus, and Kearny. Municipalities that earn certifications are considered by their peers, state government, experts, and civic organizations in New Jersey to be among the leading communities in the state.
In order to become Sustainable Jersey certified, North Bergen created a green team and completed a balance of rigorous sustainability actions. The plaque was presented to Recycling Program Aide Tom Stampe from the North Bergen Municipal Utilities Authority, which works to achieve sustainability in collaboration with other departments in town, including public works, health, police, recreation, etc.
