Park Avenue is undergoing the final stages of an extensive renovation project that included underground sewer repairs, new handicap-compliant corners at all intersections, and repaving of the entire street from 79th Street to the Guttenberg border at 71st Street. All work should be completed by Thursday, Oct. 5, 2017.
Currently the street is being restriped down the middle and for parking. Please note that the New Jersey Department of Transportation requires that angled parking spots must now be rear-in parking instead of head-in, so the spots will point in a different direction, as they do in many surrounding municipalities. Signs are posted along the street to explain the change.
This is the final step in a major infrastructure project initiated years ago, which included extensive surveillance, maintenance, and repairs to the sewage system beneath the street. Unfortunately the project was halted when Gov. Chris Christie froze all transportation-related funding within the state in 2016. As soon as the funds were made available, North Bergen moved forward with completing the project as quickly as possible.
