Nearly 1,000 North Bergen seniors attended the annual Senior Citizen Picnic at Schuetzen Park on September 13. Tables filled the main ballroom but many of the attendees spent the bulk of the afternoon on their feet, dancing to the music of a live DJ.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and the entire Board of Commissioners welcomed the seniors to the free event, at which food and beverages were provided by the Township. Also offering their greetings were Police Chief Robert Dowd, County Sheriff Frank Schilari, Assemblywoman Angelica Jimenez, County Executive Thomas DeGise, Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, and many Township officials and administrators.
Sheila Oliver, the former Assembly Speaker and current candidate for Lieutenant Governor, made a special appearance at the event and commended the hard-partying seniors of North Bergen for their energetic dancing. Many took home trophies for their footwork, or won raffle prizes.
Originally held outside, the picnic was moved indoors years ago to avoid inclement weather. The huge event is coordinated by Karen Pianese and North Bergen Community Services, and Executive Director Gerald Sanzari and the North Bergen Housing Authority. This year marked the 25th anniversary of the much-loved event, launched by Mayor Sacco shortly after he became mayor.
