Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Commissioner Julio Marenco joined with a large group from the Salvadorian community to raise the Salvadorian flag over Town Hall on Friday, Sept. 15, 2017.
Ana Lorena Siria de Lara, consul to El Salvador, spoke at the ceremony. Michelle Galves, 11, sang the U.S. National Anthem, after which attendees joined in singing the Salvadorian National Anthem. Also attending was Vice Consul Walter Antonio Gonzalez Castaneda.
El Salvador achieved its independence from Spain 196 years ago when the Central American Independence Act was signed on September 15, 1821.
The second Salvadorian parade in Hudson County will place on Sunday, Sept. 17 along Bergenline Avenue, from 79th Street in North Bergen south to 43rd Street in Union City. The parade is scheduled to begin about noon and will be attended by numerous local and regional dignitaries.
Residents are advised that there will be road closures from 85th Street south along the parade route from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. and plans to travel by vehicle should be made accordingly.
