Once again, NB C.A.R.E.S. in conjunction with the Nicholas J. Sacco Foundation and the Township of North Bergen held their annual back-to-school drive, distributing thousands of school supplies to local children.
The giveaway is traditionally held shortly before school starts, with residents invited to the Rec Center to pick up whatever they need for the school year. Kids get to choose their own backpack from among hundreds of options, and fill it themselves with pens, pencils, markers, folders, notebooks, glue, erasers, sharpeners, scissors, rulers, and more. They can also pick up new uniforms, or trade in their old ones.
Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Park and Public Property Commissioner Hugo Cabrera were on hand to open the doors to the Rec Center on Aug. 30 and meet with the hundreds of residents who lined up throughout the day to prepare for the school year.
Funded largely by grants and donations, the event benefited this year from a large contribution from Walmart. After the resident portion of the day ended at 5 p.m., teachers were invited to pick up supplies for their classes in the late afternoon.
