The Township of North Bergen has established the position of Special Law Enforcement Officer within the Police Department. The first such officer, Special Class II William Bori, was sworn in at the Board of Commissioners meeting on April 13, 2017.
Bori, 25, has an associate degree in criminal justice and patrolled the boardwalk for two years prior to being hired by North Bergen. His father recently retired from the NJ State Police.
Special Law Enforcement Officers have been introduced in neighboring municipalities with great success. They are part-time employees who supplement the regular patrol force and are authorized to exercise full powers and duties similar to those of a permanent, regularly appointed full-time police officer.
North Bergen will be hiring about eight more Special Law Enforcement Officers, all of whom will be attending the Police Academy.
