The streets of North Bergen got a little bit safer on Wednesday, Aug. 31 when six new police officers took the oath of office in a formal ceremony at Town Hall.
All six are proud residents of the township. Vanessa Espinoza was a record-holding athlete while a student at Emerson School. Biron Mendoza, Emily Ramirez, and George Somarriba all come to the NBPD after working for the Hudson County Sheriff’s Office. Salvatore Giuca previously worked as a dispatcher for the NBPD and in the state corrections department. Bryan Suarez worked as in intern in the NBPD records room while earning a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice.
The six new officers were jointly sworn in and received their badges from Mayor Nicholas Sacco and Public Safety Commissioner Allen Pascual. They were hired in anticipation of several retirements upcoming over the next few months.
Police Chief Robert Dowd introduced the officers, explaining that the mayor’s resident-only hiring policy ensures that the police department is fully invested in the health and safety of the public and accurately represents the community.
Freeholder Anthony Vainieri, who serves on the county’s Public Safety Committee, offered his congratulations to the new officers as well.
